SUPER TUESDAY! A Few Things I Am Looking For

Happy Super Tuesday!  Here are a few of the things I am looking for tonight:

1) How do things go in the bigger delegate prizes.  Texas, by far, is the largest with 155 delegates.  After that, Georgia (76 delegates), Tennessee (58), Alabama (50) and Virginia (49) are also delegate rich states.  Watching to see how things develop in those states and particularly watching the margins.

2) Watching to see what the margins are in all the states.  Trump is expected to win just about all of the states, and Cruz expected to take Texas by many.  However, the states won are not the full picture.  These states are just about all proportional, so how do they break the delegates down.  Delegates are the most important factor in attaining the nomination, particularly to attain the nomination before the convention.

3) Watching Georgia and Virginia to look for any clues on what to expect for the fall general election.  Virginia is a microcosm of the nation as a whole, probably the most important bellwether on what the nation is thinking.  Georgia is developing into a swing state again.  If Trump is the nominee, what are his chances in November of claiming those states in the GOP column.  From the viewpoints I have been seeing for some time, I think Trump would struggle in those states if he is the nominee.

4) What happens in Virginia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Arkansas?  These four states are considered to be Marco Rubio's best shot at breaking through tonight.

5) Of course, how do the delegates break down?  If Trump comes out with only 100 or so more delegates than say Rubio or Ted Cruz, this race will likely drag on a while, maybe even go to convention.  If Trump runs the table in many, then this race will start to look more and more certain.

These are among the things I am primarily looking at tonight.

SOUTH CAROLINA PRIMARY BLOGFEED

ALL TIMES EASTERN

9:40 - Cruz takes to the podium.  His supporters criticized Rubio for sounding like a winner in Iowa a couple short weeks ago.  Now he sounds like he is taking the opposite side of the table.  He looks to come in 3rd, but sounds like he is claiming victory in a state he should have won.  He claims these are historic results in his favor and that his team have "defied expectations."

9:35 - Charleston and Richland counties all in, and both voted for Rubio.  So far, Cruz is not winning a single county in a state that he was expected to have a good shot in for 1st.

9:30 - Rubio looks to have won the two populous counties in South Carolina tonight.  Most of the vote has come in from Charleston County, and Richland county is home to Columbia, and Rubio is decently in the lead there as well.

9:10 - Bush and Trump have addressed their supporters.  Rubio is about to take the podium momentarily.  Rep. Trey Gowdy has spoken at Rubio HQ and now Sen. Tim Scott is addressing the excited Rubio crowd.

8:58 - Now 67% of the numbers are in.  We have two-thirds of precincts in, and Trump is holding on to 33% of the vote, and Rubio is now alone in 2nd with 22.2% of the vote, followed by Cruz at 21.7% of the vote.  All other candidates are at 8% and less.  If Cruz ends in 3rd today, it is a major disappointment for his campaign.

8:43 - BREAKING:  Jeb Bush speaking to supporters in South Carolina announces he is withdrawing from the Presidential race.

8:38 - Now 43% of precincts in and Trump has 34% of the vote, followed by Rubio and Cruz, who are locked at 21.6% of the vote apiece..  Bush and Kasich almost locked at just over 8% of the vote apiece.

8:13 - Just over 20% of precincts in, and over 150,000 votes have been counted.  Rubio ahead of Cruz for 2nd by just 8 votes!  Close as it gets!

8:03 - New block of votes come in, propelling Rubio to 2nd.  Now 16% of vote in and Rubio with 22% of the vote to Cruz's 21%.  Kasich also now overtaking Bush for 4th.

8:00 - With 12% precincts reporting, Trump holds 34% of the vote, with Cruz at 22% and Rubio at 21%.  None of the other candidates break double digits.  Bush is in 4th with just under 10%, barely staying ahead of Kasich.

7:50 - As recently as last Sunday, the RealClearPolitics average of polling was showing Trump with a nearly 20 point margin over 2nd.  He is now fighting for a 10 point margin.  Rubio and Cruz both outperforming polling right now, while Bush, Kasich and Carson all down from their polling.

7:40 - All networks now calling the primary for Trump.  Rubio narrowly leading Cruz for 3rd.

7:31 - BREAKING:  The Fox News decision desk is calling South Carolina for Donald Trump, but projecting that he will end with only a single digit margin.  Rubio and Cruz in a race for 2nd.

7:30 - A lay of South Carolina geography to keep in mind as results come in.  The state is pretty well split in three distinctive areas, and each have their own priorities.  The NW part of the state is strong with faith voters.  Spartanburg and Greenville are main cities in this area.  The central part of the state is home to Columbia, the state capital, and has a diverse blend of voters.  There are business-minded conservatives here, as well as a lot of foreign policy-focused voters with a number of veterans in that area.  Faith conservatives are plenty here also.  Lastly, there is what is known as the "Low Country".  This is the coastal area where Charleston and Myrtle Beach are larger population centers.  Many retirees live in this area.

7:09 - Reports coming in that late deciders broke heavily for Cruz and Rubio.  It is reported to be a tight 3-way race for 1st between Cruz, Rubio, Trump.

7:08 - Judging by what I hear in the exit polls and other info coming in, I will predict the following order:
1) Rubio
2) Cruz
3) Trump
4) Kasich
5) Bush
6) Carson

NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY NIGHT LIVEBLOG

ALL TIMES EASTERN

10:35 - BREAKING: Fox is reporting that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is going home and not to South Carolina as he will reportedly "take stock" of what tonight's results mean.  He will not qualify for this Saturday's GOP debate as he will place sixth in New Hampshire tonight.

10:00 - GOP race for 3rd still very much up in the air.  We are now at 47% of precincts in, and Cruz still in 3rd with 12% of the vote.  Bush and Rubio are tied in percentage at 11%, and very close in raw votes.

9:10 - BREAKING: Fox is calling 2nd place in the New Hampshire GOP primary for Ohio Gov. John Kasich.  Battle now for 3rd place, which is very competitive.  With 24% of precincts in, Trump has 34% in 1st.  Kasich has 15%, and he is followed by Cruz and Bush both with 12% and Rubio at 10%.  Cruz is only ahead of Bush by 15 votes for that 3rd slot.  Rubio is only out of the 3rd slot by 900 votes out of over 66,000 votes counted.

8:00 - BREAKING:  Fox and CNN both call the New Hampshire primaries for Donald Trump on the Republican primary and Bernie Sanders on the Democrat side.  Just a matter now of seeing by how much and how the others on the GOP side fall in place.

7:50 - Very early, with 2% of precincts reporting, and Trump is off to a big lead at this time, at 34%.   He started though with over 40% of the vote as the first precincts reported.  Spots two through six are seeing a major log jam, with Kasich at 15%, Bush at 11%, Cruz and Rubio both at 10% and Christie down at 9%.

7:25 - "Phenomenal" and record-breaking turnout being reported in today's primary.  Some areas reporting over 60% turnout of registered voters!  The traffic line to one polling station in the town of Merrimack, a town of over 25,000 in the south of the state, stretched up to 2 miles!  The secretary of state's office and the attorney general's office in the state have ordered that the local moderator of the precinct can keep the polling place open "as long as she deems necessary".

6:10 - Personal prediction of the top 7 tonight.
                 1) Trump
                 2) Kasich
                 3) Rubio
                 4) Bush
                 5) Cruz
                 6) Christie
                 7) Fiornia

IOWA CAUCUS NIGHT LIVE BLOG

LATE BREAKING UPDATES FROM THE IOWA CAUCUSES TONIGHT WILL BE POSTED HERE:

ALL TIMES CENTRAL

10:20 - Texas Sen. Ted Cruz takes the stage for victory remarks.

10:17 - As we start the delegate count in this long process this winter and spring, Iowa starts us off in a three-way dead heat.  Preliminary delegate count totals broken down with Cruz at 8, Trump and Rubio at 7 apiece and Carson at 3.

10:06 - Review my prediction at the bottom of this post and see what you think.

9:52 - It is now 90% of caucus sites reporting on the Dem side, and we have a even-split.  Clinton with 50% and Sanders 50%.

9:48 - Florida Sen. Marco Rubio just wraps up an enthusiastic speech to supporters in Des Moines.

9:30 - BREAKING:  Republican candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has announced through Twitter that he will suspend his campaign for the Presidency.

9:25 - BREAKING:  Fox News projects a Cruz victory, with Trump in 2nd and Rubio a close 3rd.

9:20 - Now 99% of precincts in, and Cruz at 28% and Trump and Rubio in a virtual tie with 24% and 23% respectively.

9:15 - As we wait for new votes, the general consensus by way of chatter is now this.  Cruz put his eggs in the Iowa basket and he looks like he gets what he needed.  Not a major boost, as this state was tailor-made for him.  Trump seems to have underperformed if this holds, and talk already has him in a must-win situation in New Hampshire next week.  Marco Rubio looks to be the big winner by dramatically overperforming, and now we can expect to see him drawing support away from Kasich, Christie and Bush in New Hampshire.  Looking later in the month, The top three today have strength in South Carolina, and Sen. Tim Scott there is setting up to endorse Rubio tomorrow.

8:58 - BREAKING:  Dem candidate Martin O'Malley, the former Maryland governor, is reportedly set to suspend his Presidential campaign tonight.  That is no surprise, but the real story there is that the only younger Democratic candidate is dropping out.  The party that tries to build an image of appealing to youth and looking to the future has two career politicians that are well into their 70s.

8:56 - Neil Cavuto on Fox Business coverage is reporting that "Marco Rubio could be the story of the night."  I think that is an obvious answer.

8:53 - Total between the three contenders narrowing with 75% of precincts in.  Cruz now at 28%, Trump at 25% and Rubio at 22%.  Just six points separating 1st from 3rd!

8:46 - Narrowest of leads for Hillary Clinton on the Dem side.  With 63% of precincts in, Clinton at 51% and Sanders at 49%.

8:38 - Now 47% of precincts in.  Cruz still stuck at 29%, Trump at 25%, and Rubio nipping at his heels with 21%.

8:33 - Sudden surge of numbers coming in.  Now 41% reporting, and Cruz still narrowly ahead with 29%, Trump 26% and Rubio at 20%, breaking into the 20%+ club.  Carson in 4th at 10%.

8:31 - Here is one precinct that Rubio won in a blowout:

Urbandale-15 is a rout.
Rubio 106 Cruz 39 Trump 33 Carson 11 Kasich 10 Paul 5 Fiorina 5 Santorum 4 Jeb 4 Huckabee 2

8:22 - CNN now has an estimate at the Ankeny caucus with Rubio at 34%, Cruz at 28% and Trump 18%.  Not indicative of the Hawkeye State as a whole, but Trump's weakness is surprising as it is a business conservative's area.

8:19 - Numbers continuing to come in.  Now at 24% of precincts in, and Cruz still in 1st with 30%, Trump next at 27% and Rubio at 19%.  Many larger caucus sites and urban areas still have yet to report.  Watch these urban areas where there will be likely stronger support for Trump and Rubio.

8:01 - Now 7% of precincts in with Cruz at 30%, Trump 29% and Rubio 18%.

7:49 - Very, very early numbers in now.  With 3% of precincts in, Cruz at 31%, Trump 30% and Rubio 16%.  All others in single digits.

7:38 - CNN entrance poll showing 63% of GOP caucus-goers consider themselves evangelical.  Among them, the vast majority split nearly identically between Cruz, Trump, Rubio with Cruz 2% ahead.  Among non-evangelicals, Trump holds a decent lead with Rubio in 2nd.  This has to be considered concerning and pretty alarming news at Cruz headquarters.

7:15 - Fox News entrance polls showing a tight race on the GOP caucus between Trump, Cruz and Rubio for first.  Entrance polling on the Dem caucus showing a tight race between Clinton and Sanders.  In other words, we have a free-for-all, just as we expected coming in this weekend.

7:10 - Personal prediction of the GOP race top 5 tonight
           1) Cruz
           2) Rubio
           3) Trump
           4) Carson
           5) Paul

PRESIDENTIAL ENDORSEMENT

While many folks remain undecided often times up until just days before an election, I have long made it a point to try to endorse early on when I know there is a candidate who needs to be supported.

This year, we are seriously in a historic and crossroads election.  Who is the best candidate to undo the eight years of damage to our Constitution, to our moral fabric, to our standing and repor in the world?  Looking even further back, who is in the best position to lead the way in rolling back the decades of blows to our founding values and our reality in being founded as a Christian nation?  Who will work to stem the tide of now trillions in national debt and growing radical Islamic and racial violence at home and particularly abroad?  These are critical questions the American people need to ponder on.

Well before 2015, even as far back as 2013, my choice all along was Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.  I believe he combined nearly all the characteristics needed in our next President.  A fighter, strong in faith, conservative on family values, economics and foreign policy, from the Midwest, able to attract grassroots and establishment Republicans, along with independents.  When he withdrew from the race, I had to ask the question of who was now in the race that would be the best overall candidate.

As I made my decision, I had a number of factors and scenarios I had to decipher:
Who could unite the GOP?
Who is the strongest conservative who doesn't deliver a harsh message?
Who is optimistic about our nation and our potential?
Who is strong on faith and lives a life of character?
Who has decent experience in public service?
Who is experienced enough to know what needs to be done, yet young enough to fully know our unique time in history?
On that note, who has a strong vision to make this another American Century just as the last?
Who can beat the Democratic nominee?
Who can not only win the must-wins of Florida, Virginia, Ohio and Colorado, but who might be able to put states like Pennsylvania, Nevada and New Mexico back in play like when we started this century?
What are their stands on the issues and what is their record on those issues?

The most important issues to me, in no particular order:
Respect for the Constitution and standing firm on our Founding document.
Strong faith and character.
Appointment of strict Supreme Court and federal judges, conservative by the Constitution.
Strong against radical Islamic terror.
For the right to life and the Biblical definition of marriage.
Strong economy by reforming the tax code, breaking down unnecessary regulations, and fighting the national debt.

When I asked myself these questions and surveyed the field, I found that one man far superseded the rest of the field when putting all of these issues together.

That man is Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

He has a 94% conservative rating from Heritage Action and a 98% lifetime conservative rating from the American Conservative Union.
He has a strong, positive vision for our nation and its future.  He is optimistic and hopeful.
He is unashamed to talk about issues of faith and family values, and has a conservative record on those issues.  He is a family man with a highly respectable character.
His experience on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has prepared him to be the strongest in the field regarding knowledge of and solutions to defeating radical Islam.
He is well experienced in local and state, and now federal government and how it works through his years of public service.
I am confident he would appoint strong, constructionist Supreme Court judges.
He has a strong, conservative vision on reforming the tax code, entitlements, dismantling unneeded regulations and bringing the national debt under control.
His vision and charisma, and his inspirational life story, is attractive to many.
He can unite the GOP, and he is able to deliver Florida, and would be very competitive in Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Nevada.
HE CAN DEFEAT CLINTON OR SANDERS!

There are a number of good, conservative candidates in this race.  Cruz, Santorum, Carson, Fiornia. Walker, Perry and Jundal were all great conservative candidates, but unfortunately could not catch on.  There is a big choice to be made.  At the end of the day, however, it is Sen. Marco Rubio that is the total package, the best man to be President of the United States at this time.

I hope you will decide the same also!

SERMONS ON AUTHORITY IN MORALITY AND MARRIAGE FROM THIS PAST SUNDAY.

The Conservative Statesman responded to Friday's troubling Supreme Court ruling on marriage with a serious of Bible studies and sermons.  I preach every other week temporarily at the Oak Grove Church of Christ, west of Sparta, Tenn.  I borrowed these messages from Mark Copeland's "Executable Outlines" and built on them.  These are the outlines from Copeland.

SUNDAY AM BIBLE STUDY:

"MORAL ISSUES CONFRONTING CHRISTIANS"
Authority In Morality
INTRODUCTION 1. Christians today are confronted with many conflicting views of morality... a. People have different opinions concerning what is right and wrong b. What once was generally accepted as good and true is now challenged c. Governments are redefining the concept of marriage d. Businesses often operate with ethics that sanction lying, stealing 2. How does one know what is right and wrong in areas of morality...? a. Everyone has a sense of right and wrong b. But the standard of right and wrong often differs [The answer for the Christian is simple. But before we consider it, let's first review...] I. WHAT MANY ACCEPT AS AUTHORITY IN MORALITY A. THEIR FEELINGS... 1. "If it feels good, it must be right" 2. The Bible warns against trusting in "feelings" a. "There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." - Pr 14:12 b. "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool..." - Pr 28:26 c. "O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps." - Jer 10:23 -- Many people have destroyed themselves by following their feelings B. THEIR CONSCIENCE... 1. "Let your conscience be your guide" 2. But one's conscience is not always reliable a. Paul had served God with a good conscience throughout his life - Ac 23:1 b. Even at a time when he was persecuting Christians! - cf. Ac 26:9-11 -- Our conscience is like a clock, which works properly only if set properly C. THEIR FRIENDS... 1. "Everyone else is doing it" 2. But consider the words of Jesus, in describing the end of the majority - Mt 7:13-14 3. If you followed the majority... a. In Noah's day, you would have perished in the flood b. In Joshua's day, you would have perished in the wilderness -- Following the majority can be like lemmings running over a cliff D. THEIR MINISTERS... 1. "The preacher (priest, rabbi, etc.) says it is okay" 2. They reason that surely these "men of God" could not lead them astray 3. Yet notice the warnings given by Jesus, Paul and Peter a. Religious leaders can be "blind leaders of the blind" - Mt 15:12-14 b. They can be "ministers of Satan" - 2Co 11:13-15 c. There will be false teachers with destructive ways - 2Pe 3:1-3 -- Following the wrong minister can lead to corruption [It is clear that what many people accept as authority in morality should not be a guide for Christians. So let's now consider what should be...] II. THE CHRISTIAN'S AUTHORITY IN MORALITY A. JESUS HAS ALL AUTHORITY... 1. In heaven and on earth - Mt 28:18 2. In all areas, including sexual mores and behavior - Ep 4:17-24 3. He will one day judge all mankind - Ac 17:30-31 4. And the standard of judgment will be His words - Jn 12:48 -- Jesus is the ultimate standard of authority in morality B. JESUS DELEGATED AUTHORITY TO HIS APOSTLES... 1. To receive them is to receive Him - Mt 10:40; Jn 13:20 2. They were sent as "ambassadors" for Christ - 2Co 5:20 3. To ensure reliability, Jesus promised them the Holy Spirit - Jn 14:26 4. The Spirit would guide the apostles into all truth - Jn 16:12-13 5. Thus the apostles proclaimed "the whole counsel of God" - Ac 20:27 6. Christians were to accept the apostles' words as truth - cf. 1Co 14:37 -- The apostles' doctrine is the Christians' standard of authority (Ac 2:42) C. THEIR AUTHORITY PERTAINS TO AREAS OF MORALITY... 1. As Paul solemnly charged the church in Thessalonica - 1Th 4:1-8 a. Addressing sexual immorality b. And marital faithfulness 2. As he likewise wrote to the church in Ephesus - Ep 4:17-32 a. Addressing lewdness, greediness, and deceitful lusts b. And lying, anger, stealing, foul language -- Morality is an integral part of "the truth" that is in Jesus CONCLUSION 1. Many people go through life confused about morality... a. They constantly wonder: "Is this right or wrong for me?" b. They stumble their way through life, making wrong choices with terrible consequences 2. The Christian need not be confused about morality... a. The truth is in Jesus - cf. Ep 4:21 b. God has given us "all things that pertain to live and godliness" - 2Pe 1:3 If you are looking for truth as it pertains to morality, then let Jesus and His apostles be your guide. As Jesus said... "I am the way, the truth, and the life." - Jn 14:6

SUNDAY AM SERMON:

"MORAL ISSUES CONFRONTING CHRISTIANS"

The Institution Of Marriage

INTRODUCTION

1. Another moral issue that confronts Christians today relates to the
   institution of marriage...
   a. Many people are clamoring to redefine marriage
   b. Governments are responding with laws that redefine who may marry
   c. Same-sex marriage is becoming legal; polygamy and other forms of
      marriage will likely follow

2. As Christians are confronted with this issue, we do well to ask...
   a. What did Jesus and His apostles reveal about marriage?
   b. What do they say about same-sex marriage?
   c. How should we respond to those in same-sex marriages?

[We begin therefore by looking at...]

I. JESUS AND HIS APOSTLES ON MARRIAGE

   A. JESUS' TEACHINGS ON MARRIAGE...
      1. Marriage was instituted by God at the beginning - Mt 19:3-4
         a. Weddings may be a social custom, and variously defined by
            cultures
         b. But marriage itself is ordained by God, not by society or
            the state
      2. Marriage was designed for those created male and female - Mt
         19:4
         a. From the beginning this was God's design
         b. Beginning with Adam and Eve (not Adam and Steve)
      3. Marriage is for man and wife, who become 'one flesh' - Mt 19:5
         a. A man is to leave his family to start a new one
         b. Man and woman are biologically designed to complement each
            other
      4. Marriage is a union that God joins, not the state - Mt 19:6
         a. Note well: only God does the joining
         b. The state cannot force God to do something by passing laws
      5. States may therefore declare marriages that are unlawful in
         God's sight - cf. Mk 6:17-18
         a. Herod had "married" Herodias, i.e., approved by the state
         b. But in God's sight it was "not lawful" for him to have her
-- Jesus defined marriage as instituted and regulated by God, not
         the state

   B. THE APOSTLES' TEACHINGS ON MARRIAGE...
      1. Sex in marriage is honorable, sex outside marriage is not - He
         13:4
         a. God will judge fornicators (any who practice sexual
            immorality, see previous lesson)
         b. God will judge adulterers (any who violate the bond
            involving those married )
      2. To avoid fornication, let each man have his own wife and each
         woman her own husband
         a. The solution to sexual immorality is heterosexual marriage
            - 1Co 7:1-5
         b. The only alternative is self-control - 1Co 7:6-9
-- The apostles taught marriage is regulated by God and His Word

[Both Jesus and His apostles have important things to say about divorce
as it relates to the institution of marriage, but we will discuss that
in another lesson. Let's now turn our attention to...]

II. THE ISSUE OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

   A. WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES...
      1. Again we note what the Bible clearly teaches:
         a. Sex outside of marriage is sinful (see previous lesson)
            1) Whether heterosexual or homosexual
            2) It falls into the category of "sexual immorality"
               (fornication)
         b. The solution to sexual immorality is clearly stated
            1) Either heterosexual marriage - 1Co 7:1-5
            2) Or self-control - 1Co 7:6-9
         c. Marriage is a divine institution, not a civil one
            1) God determines what constitutes a proper marriage, not
               man
            2) Marriage throughout the Bible is always between a man and
               woman
      2. We now note the following:
         a. There is not one mention regarding same-sex marriage
            1) Even though the practice was known among the Gentiles
            2) Emperor Nero himself had two same-sex marriages
               (Pythagoras, Sporus)
         b. There is no Biblical teaching on how same-sex marriages are
            to work
            1) Who is to be the head? Who is to submit?
            2) All discussions pertaining to marriage describe
               husband-wife (male-female) relationships - 1Co 7:10-40;
               Ro 7:1-4; Ep 5:22-33; Col 3:18-19; 1Ti 3:2,11-12; 5:14;
               Tit 1:6; 2:4-5; 1Pe 3:1-7
-- At best, the Bible is silent regarding same-sex marriage; of
course, there is the issue of homosexuality itself (to be
         discussed later)

   B. HOW CHRISTIANS SHOULD RESPOND...
      1. Same-sex marriage is on par with other unscriptural marriages
         a. Divorce and remarriage can lead to adulterous marriages (see
            next lesson)
         b. Governments have sanctioned adulterous marriages for years
         c. Many Christians have friends and family involved in such
            marriages
         d. As same-sex marriages become common, so will our
            acquaintance with such
         e. We must stand firm in support of truth concerning the
            institution of marriage
      2. As with all people engaged in sinful behavior, we should:
         a. Love the sinner while hating the sin
         b. Speak the truth in love, not hate - Ep 4:15
         c. Reach out with gentleness, patience, humility - 2Ti 2:24-26
         d. Convert them to Jesus as Savior and Lord (willing to obey in
            all things) - Mt 28:18-20
         e. We should certainly not fault the children - cf. Eze 18:20
      3. As "citizen saints" living in a free society, we should:
         a. Pray for our leaders, that we may live peaceable, godly
            lives - 1Ti 2:1-4
         b. Live as sojourners and pilgrims, setting honorable examples
            - 1Pe 2:11-12; Ro 12:1-2
         c. Vote for those who respect God's Word on such issues, for it
can only "insure domestic tranquility...promote the general
welfare" of one's country - cf. Pr 14:34
-- Our response should be no different than with any other sin

CONCLUSION

1. The institution of marriage has long been under attack...
   a. Divorce and remarriage for any reason has undermined it for
      generations
   b. Same-sex marriage is only the latest attack; it probably won't be
      the last
   c. Many choose to simply cohabitate rather than marry at all

2. As Christians confronted with such attacks, let us...
   a. Remain true to the teachings of Christ and His apostles
   b. Illustrate by way of example that God's way is good, acceptable
      and perfect
   c. Reach out to all who are lost in sin with both the truth and love
      that is in Jesus Christ

Always remembering that when it comes to the institution of marriage...

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but
fornicators and adulterers God will judge. - Heb 13:4

SUNDAY PM SERMON:

                    "THE CHRISTIAN HOME AND FAMILY"

                        The Sanctity Of Marriage

INTRODUCTION

1. Marriage as an institution today is struggling...
   a. Many seek to redefine what constitutes a marriage
   b. We hear of same-sex marriages, open marriages, polygamy,
      polyandry, polyamory
   c. Others decry marriage altogether, preferring simple cohabitation
   d. Many joke about it: "Marriage is a wonderful institution. But
who would want to live in an institution?" - Henry Mencken

2. The family as an institution today is struggling...
   a. Husbands and wives often suffer strained relationships
   b. Parents and children are frequently at odds with one another
   c. Much misery in life is due to dysfunctional family relations
   d. Some prefer that government assume the role of raising children

3. I believe much of the problem is due to self-centeredness in our
   society...
   a. People are told to "look out for #1" in all their relations
      (business, family, etc.)
   b. Thus many enter marriage and start families with selfish attitudes
   c. Yet no relationship can exist peacefully and lovingly with selfish
      participants

4. The Bible has much to say about marriage and family...
   a. Especially in the teachings of Jesus and His apostles
   b. That has helped many to have long-lasting, fulfilling
      relationships
   c. Which can affect both our temporal and eternal happiness

[In this series of lessons, we shall consider what Jesus and His
apostles taught concerning the Christian home and family. I believe a
good place to start is by affirming "The Sanctity Of Marriage"...]

I. THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE DEFINED

   A. THE MEANING OF SANCTITY...
      1. Sanctity is defined as the quality of being holy, sacred
      2. Thus it is common to speak of "holy matrimony" (i.e., sacred
         marriage)

   B. THE SACREDNESS OF MARRIAGE...
      1. Marriage is one of the holiest of relations two people can have
      2. Marriage is a bond created by God Himself, thus we must treat
         it as sacred
      3. Marriage is not something to be entered into lightly
      4. "Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage." - President
         George W. Bush

[Is the idea of marriage as a sacred union a Biblical concept? What did
Jesus and His apostles say about it...?]

II. THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE DELINEATED

   A. MARRIAGE WAS INSTITUTED BY GOD...
      1. From the very beginning, following the Creation - Mt 19:3-4;
         cf. Gen 2:18-24
      2. Designed for those created as male and female - Mt 19:4
      3. Whose union becomes "one flesh" (produce offspring) - Mt 19:5
-- Marriage is not a creation of the state, but of God Himself!

   B. MARRIAGE IS REGULATED BY JESUS...
      1. Jesus has been given all authority, will be our Judge in all
         things - Mt 28:18; 2Co 5:10
      2. He taught that man may try to put asunder, but only God puts
         asunder - Mt 19:7-9
         a. One may legally divorce and remarry, but adultery can still
            occur - Mt 5:31-32
         b. God allows divorce only for fornication, and remarriage by
            the innocent - Mt 19:9
      3. He taught some might have to remain celibate ("make themselves
eunuchs") for the sake of the kingdom of heaven - Mt 19:11-12
         a. Perhaps because they had been divorced for adultery or
            unlawfully married
         b. Or because they were single by choice, or never asked to be
            married
      4. His apostle Paul had more to say concerning marriage
         a. Marriage is for life; marrying another while one’s spouse is
alive is adultery - Ro 7:1-4
         b. Each person is to have his or her own spouse, not shared
            - 1Co 7:2
         c. Husbands and wives have certain duties toward one another
            - 1Co 7:3-5
         d. One is not to divorce; if divorced, must remain single or
            return to spouse - 1Co 7:10-11
         e. If an unbelieving spouse departs, a believer is not
obligated to fulfill marital duties (but that does not
necessarily imply they are free to remarry) - cf. 1Co 7:3-5,
            12-16
-- Jesus as Lord over all is the final Arbiter regarding marriage!

   C. MARRIAGE IS RESERVED FOR INTIMACY...
      1. The only proper relationship for sexual intimacy (intercourse)
         is marriage - He 13:4
         a. Not before the wedding, during courtship, but only after the
            wedding
         b. Greatly simplifying the perennial question: "When is the
            right time?"
      2. Sex outside marriage (between a man and a woman) is fornication
         a. Fornication includes pre-marital, extra-marital, or same-sex
            relations
         b. Such conduct can keep one out of the kingdom of God - cf.
            1Co 6:9-10
      3. Sex outside marriage is not without physical and psychological
         consequence
         a. Even casual "hookups" deeply affect the brain and our
            emotions - cf. 1Co 6:16
         b. Chemical reactions in the body occur that lead to bonding,
even addiction (this is not even considering the
            consequences of STDs!)
         c. Leading to an increase of depression and suicide when there
is no marriage - Heritage Foundation, 2003
         d. 25.3% of sexually active teenage girls experienced
depression, compared to 7.7% of sexually abstinent girls
            - ibid.
         e. 14.3% of sexually active girls attempted suicide, compared
to 5.1% of their virgin peers - ibid.
         f. For more, read this: There Is Nothing Brief About A Hookup
      4. Pre-marital sex endangers having a successful marriage
         a. The national divorce rate in the United States is over 40
percent - National Survey Of Family Growth
         b. Couples who wait to have sex until marriage - and remain
faithful - have a divorce rate of only 20 percent - ibid.
         c. Couples who have more sexual partners prior to or outside of
marriage have a much higher rate of divorce - ibid.
         d. Those who have as many as five partners have only a 30
percent chance that their marriage will not end in divorce
            - ibid.
      5. A successful marriage requires mutual respect and trust
         a. Courtship is the time to build respect and trust which will
            strengthen your marriage
         b. If your potential spouse will sin with you before you
            marry...
         c. ...what assurance do you have they will not sin against you
            after you marry?
-- The sanctity of marriage is preserved when it alone is the
         realm of sexual intimacy!

CONCLUSION

1. Marriage is not an institution...
   a. Created and designed by man or the state
   b. Subject to alteration by societal whims

2. Marriage is a sacred institution...
   a. Instituted by God in the beginning
   b. Regulated by Jesus and His apostles in the Word of God
   c. Reserved for sexual intimacy between a man and a women

3. Marriage is a successful institution...
   a. When we follow the Biblical injunctions concerning it
   b. When members of the family fulfill their proper roles

We shall consider those injunctions, starting with the duties of
husbands in our next lesson. In the meantime, some food for thought
from an uninspired (though wise) perspective...

The 10 Commandments of Successful Marriage

Judge Joseph Sabbath, after twenty year’s experience in presiding over
what he called "the nightmare world of the divorce courts," framed ten
commandments of a successful marriage which, he predicted, could prevent
at least ninety percent of marital smash-ups:

1. Bear and forbear.

2. Work together, play together, and grow up together.

3. Avoid the little quarrels, and the big ones will take care of
   themselves.

4. Compromise (give and take). It is the antitoxin of divorce.

5. Practice sympathy, good humor and mutual understanding.

6. Don’t grouch before breakfast or after it.

7. Respect your "in-laws," but don’t criticize them or take criticism
   from them.

8. Establish your own home, even in a one room flat.

9. Fight for each other, but not with each other.

10. Build your home on religious faith, with love and forgiveness as
    the watchword.
